On Tuesday 13 October we are inviting members to a tasting of arguably the most famous Single Malt of all The Glenlivet. In the 18th and early 19th century draconian tax laws had driven the Scotch whisky industry underground and illegal. The area that had the best reputation for producing the finest whisky was a remote area in the Highlands called Glenlivet which was far away from the prying eyes of the hated excisemen. When in 1823 the law was changed to encourage the industry to turn legitimate, George Smith, a former illegal smuggler from Glenlivet, was the first to go legal and opened the official Glenlivet distillery in 1824.

The official Glenlivet whisky was incredibly successful and other distillers tried to cash in on its reputation by branding ‘Glenlivet’  on their casks which lead to Glenlivet being called ‘the longest glen in Scotland’ because so many distillers claimed to be located there.

In 1884, after a long dispute and legal case, the exclusive status of Glenlivet was established and thus known as The Glenlivet the ‘Single Malt that started it all’.
The Glenlivet Brand Ambassador Phil Huckle is going to guide us through the tasting of four of the Glenlivet range.
