Ron Zacapa Maya Gold Cocktail Party
Monday 29 June * Boisdale of Bishopsgate
Members: (at no cost with up to 3 guests); Non Members: £15; 5.30-7.30pm
Aged at an altitude of one and a half miles above sea level in a “house above the clouds”, Zacapa rum Centenario 23 has a heavenly taste as unique as the story behind it.
Zacapa rum’s home in Guatemala is a stunning blend of soaring mountains, active volcanoes and verdant countryside in the region of Quetzaltenango (say that 3 times fast!). Its creation starts with the fertile volcanic soil ideally suited for the cultivation of sugar cane where the tropical sun shines all year round.
Only the first pressing of sugar cane - delightfully called “virgin honey” in the Guatemalan dialect – is used in its production (most rums are made using molasses). After distillation, Zacapa rum is taken to the Guatemalan highlands where it is aged in white oak casks.
Guatemala has a rich history dating from the Mayan period, with the original language widely spoken and many aspects of this ancient culture still present in everyday life. To reflect this rich heritage the Zacapa rum pack features petate (a woven mat) – the old symbol of political power and time and space unity.
Petate can be found at several Mayan temple entrances (e.g. Popol Nah or House of the Mat Temple in Copán) and now each Zacapa rum bottle displays a handmade petate crafted by a direct descendant of the ancient Maya people.
On Monday 29 June Boisdale of Bishopsgate will be hosting the Ron Zacapa Maya Gold Cocktail Party to which all Members and their guests are invited (up to three guests per member). Optional dress code is gold or rainbow* and bookings can be made with Pam on 020 7283 1763 (info@boisdale-city.co.uk) 5.30-7.30pm.
*There is no other country so full of colours as Guatemala. There are about thirty different groups of Mayas, many of them still wearing their typical dress every day. Women shine in their beautifully woven huipils, embroidered with flowers, birds or butterflies. If you ever visit a marketplace in Guatemala, you’ll see it’s a feast of colours.
