FARMHOUSE CHEESES FROM THE BURGUNDY REGION
L’Ami du Chambertin
An artisanal cheese from the small village of Gevrey-
Chambertin. It is an Eppoise-type cheese, rind-washed with Marc de Bourgogne.
Charollais Chevre
This farmhouse cheese comes from the granite plains of Charola.
Epoisses de Bourgogne
This cheese was very popular at the beginning of the 20 century but the production did not survive WW II. Only thanks to M. Berthaut the cheese was introduced again in 1956 and is produced on single farm in Bourgogne.
Rouy
First made at the beginning of the 20th century by a certain Monsieur Rouy, this cheese resembles a pont l’evêque.
Burgundy is an area rich in history, gastronomy and wine; unlike the great estates of Bordeaux, the finest Burgundian vineyards are owned by a proliferation of smallholders, a direct result of the revolution.
Prior to 1789 the church owned most of the vineyards in Burgundy, but these were seized and broken up, the new order being as much anti-church as anti-aristocracy. Burgundy's great vineyards were further fragmented by inheritance laws, which divided the plots into smaller and smaller parcels. Consequently, many are now owned by as many as 100 individual growers, therefore it is important to choose your grower carefully.
The wines we will be presenting come from top estates in the Cote d’Or; the villages in the part of north Burgundy which produce the finest red wines from 100% Pinot Noir grapes. The wines are soft, intense, smooth and hopefully well cellared and stand up well to the test of time!
