ALL CHEESES GREAT AND SMALL

	27 APRIL 2012

As of last week connoisseurs and gourmands have yet another good reason to head for Boisdale of Canary Wharf. Executive Head Chef Andy Rose has rolled out an impressive cheese trolley with a daily selection of around twenty cheeses all in peak condition. The fromagier is on hand every day to talk customers through the selection and help choose the right plate depending on preferences according to taste, texture or the region of origin. All cheese is accompanied with fresh pears, artisan breads, oatcakes and honey.

BELOW ARE FIVE FACTS ABOUT CHEESE YOU DIDN’T KNOW

1- The U.S. produces more cheese than any other nation. According to figures from 2006, the U.S. provides nearly 30% of the cheese produced in the world, nearly four million metric tons in total. That’s enough to provide 2.2 pounds for every man, woman and child on the planet.
2- The most expensive cheese is from Sweden
The most expensive cheese in the world is made from the milk of three moose called Gullan, Haelga and Juna who live on a small farm in Bjursholm, Sweden. The animals are tame, which is rare for moose. Even so, they take over two hours each to be milked and only in certain months of the year. The final results sell for GBP 300 per pound.
3- The French are not the biggest consumers of cheese
According to the last survey carried out in 2003, it is the Greeks who are the biggest consumers of cheese in the world (they eat a massive 60.6 pounds of it every year). Unsurprisingly, the majority of the cheese eaten, three quarters of it to be exact, is feta. The French come in at a close second at 52.9 pounds per person, although from a much wider range of cheeses.
4- Cheddar is the most popular cheese in the world
Although the name Cheddar, and the very best examples of the cheese, come from a small area with the same name in Somersetshire, Great Britain, cheddar is also a process of cheese making and can be made anywhere in the world. Over 8.8 pounds of cheddar cheese is consumed per capita per year in the United States alone.
5- There is even a cheese made out of human breast milk Le Petit Singly is a small farm in France, which makes cheese from donated human breast milk. The proprietors claim that it is rich in vitamins and has a slight taste of hazelnut.

	Dear Member,

The Boisdale annual trip to Cuba for the cigar festival this year was a great success, enjoyed enormously by all. Our Cuba Travel Partners who organised the trip on our behalf are called Esencia Experiences www.esenciaexperiences.com and they did an excellent job, so we thought we would give them a mention. If you are planning a trip to Cuba please do not hesitate to get in touch with them on +44 (0)7793451652. They organise a broad range of holiday activities from Art to Sailing and Fishing and of course beach holidays as well.

Cuba’s indefinable identity makes it one of the most colourful and fascinating places on earth. Full of romance, magic and mystique; a fascinating history of conquistadors, buccaneers and smugglers; home to the cocktail, the cigar, carnival and salsa; breathtaking architecture from baroque to art nouveau and deco. The continuity of the past with the present, and a spectacular backdrop of lush rainforest, white beaches and coral reef, makes Cuba an indescribable and extraordinary experience.

	TUESDAY 13 MARCH 2012

David Redfern will host an exhibition of his work in association with Bang & Olufsen television and audio systems. A champagne and Scottish seafood reception to the sounds of the greatest musicians of our time heard through the sound system created by the world’s most exclusive manufacturer of audio-visual equipment – Bang & Olufsen

Strictly by personal invitation from David Redfern and Bang & Olufsen.

	ABOUT DAVID REDFERN
David Redfern’s career began in the twilight jazz clubs of 1960s London when he first published photos featuring Kenny Ball, Chris Barber and George Melly. Later came TV work where he made many of his now classic shots of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Dusty Springfield, shortly followed by nights spent at the 100 Club, Ronnie Scott's or the Marquee, where he captured on film all the jazz greats from Miles Davis to Ella Fitzgerald. These pictures were to contribute to what is now the most comprehensive jazz photography collection in Europe. To break into the commercial world by chasing the big American names, David became a regular visitor to the jazz festivals in Newport, Antibes and Montreux, and the big rock festivals, photographing such greats as Hendrix and Dylan. September 1995 saw the launch of a series of 10 jazz postage stamps by the US post office in which three of David's images were used: Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk & Coleman Hawkins. The inclusion of the Louis Armstrong image was a result of some 38,000 signatures collected from 65 countries over 8 years, and had a special launch in New Orleans, the birthplace of Louis Armstrong. As a point of interest the picture of Louis Armstrong was taken by David in New York in 1967, on his first visit to the US.

The First Event of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations
Friday 1 & Saturday 2 June

The only other British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee was Queen Victoria in 1897. This is undoubtedly one of the most important racing days of all time and certainly for those who cherish our Queen, a poignant day to celebrate a life dedicated to her country and people, and reflect upon the joys and challenges that her reign has seen over the last 60 years. Perhaps one of the Queen’s greatest pleasures in life continues to be her dedication to racing. More than 200,000 race goers are expected to attend the Investec Derby Festival this year and global television audiences of over 1 billion are anticipated. We hope to see the return of the Queen’s horse Carlton House in The Investec Coronation Cup. If Carlton House were to win the Queen would be absolutely delighted and nearly a quarter of the world’s population would be celebrating with her… We’ll have to wait and see!

The most prestigious enclosure available throughout the Festival will be the Boisdale Enclosure, located next to the Queen’s Stand on The Prince’s Lawn. Part of Epsom’s Premier Enclosure, the Boisdale Enclosure badge will entitle you to access both the Queen’s Stand and Grandstand Enclosures should you wish. The Prince’s Lawn is situated on the finishing line between the Queen’s Stand and the Owners and Trainers Prince’s Stand. Lunch will be served inside the pavilion in which giant flat screen televisions will show all the racing. The Boisdale Enclosure extends all the way to the rails. Quite simply, there is not a better position from which to observe some of the finest quality thoroughbred horseracing in the world. The dress code will be suits on Investec Ladies Day and formal top hat and tails on Investec Derby Day.

The Boisdale exclusive facility will include a magnificent Whisky & Cigar Bar and an all-day complimentary Oyster & Champagne Bar. At the caviar reception Pol Roger Sir Winston Churchill 2002 champagne will be served. As the Queen arrives on Investec Derby Day a toast will be proposed with Chivas Royal Salute 25 year old whisky. The lunch will include Scottish lobster and the very finest dry aged Aberdeen Angus fillet of beef accompanied by exceptional white Burgundy and Claret. Traditional tea will be served with Boisdale Vintage 2005 Rosé Champagne. Betting facilities will be located within the Boisdale Enclosure, so there will be no reason to leave! After the races the party will continue with more Champagne and cocktails and truly the ultimate Frank Sinatra tribute from Stephen Triffitt and his big band.

As a very special leaving present to commemorate the day, guests will receive a Fortnum & Mason’s Hamper. Boisdale Jazz & Cigar Club members and friends have the opportunity to register interest, with no obligation, to purchase badges for The Boisdale Enclosure one week ahead of their being made available to the global market.

Calling all budding Eric Claptons on Tuesday December 6th!

Boisdale of Canary Wharf is delighted to announce the second Gibson City Blues Jam in association with Stratstone of Mayfair Aston Martin and Gibson Custom. To be held on Tuesday December 6th. This exciting music event will see Boisdale customers and would-be Keith Richards take to the stage for a jam session on a Gibson Custom guitar with the Pacifico Blues, Gibson City Blues Jam’s house band.

This fantastic new series of jam nights is part of the Boisdale restaurant group’s commitment to live music. Here is a ‘money can’t buy’ opportunity for the true fan to live the dream and play in a band before a live audience at a world-class venue. Who knows, they might even be discovered.

Guests can join the house band to jam to a track of their own choice be it on guitar, bass, drums, keys or vocals. Pacifico Blues will support and improvise incorporating the participant’s style and musical ability. All those who wish to perform must have a reservation to eat at Boisdale on the night, be it for a classic burger, one of the restaurant’s set menus or a selection à la carte. Guests are asked to specify their intention to play when they make their reservation. The event commences at 8.30pm.
