Did you ever take a bottle of whiskey off your counter that had been sitting there a couple of weeks and were disappointed with its taste? If so, you didn’t have it stored correctly and your whisky has probably gotten some air into it that has majorly ruined the potency and flavor.

If you want to avoid this happening to your favorite spirits, then here are some techniques you can use to keep it fresh and drinkable for months to come:

    1. Keep it Away from Light

You have probably noticed that whisky is usually found in bottles that aren’t clear so as to keep the light from ruining the drink’s quality as time passes. If you do find a clear bottle put it in a box or in the back of your cupboard to store it correctly.

    2. Keep it Away from Heat

Avoid temperatures that are higher than the temperature in the room. Store the whisky in cool places, the same way you would store wine.

    3. Don’t Ruin the Cork

Whisky is stronger than wine so it can cause the cork to degrade. This means it’s a good idea to use a humidifier or dehumidifier to control the humidity where you store it. If you don’t, your cork will dry up and the whiskey’s seal will be destroyed, thus ruining the drink by allowing air to leak in.

    4. Keep Whisky away from Air

Oxidation ruins whisky. We can’t say that enough. You can use wine preservers to protect your scotch or just don’t open any more than you think you can use in a reasonable amount of time.

Follow these tips and you’ll be enjoying tasty and potent whiskey for months, or perhaps years, to come.
